Flight Cage Complex
As the population of the Comox Valley and Northern Vancouver Island
grows, and with new transportation routes opening up the wilderness
of the island, more and more visitors are venturing into the remote
areas. This increases their impact on the wildlife. In order to
lessen this impact we embarked on a very ambitious project.
We needed a flight pen to evaluate the abilities of birds prior to
release. This facility had to contain at least a 40 foot caged area
to fly small to medium size raptors to insure they have the ability
to catch their own food. By the fall of 2001 we had completed phase
one. This included the design and building of a 40X30 caged complex
complete with electrical wiring roughed in. This phase of the
project was sponsored by The Vancouver
Foundation, Shell
Environmental Fund, TD Friend of the Environment and
The Comox
Valley Community Foundation.
We are now fundraising to complete phase two of the flight cage complex.
The electrical and plumbing connections, installation of sailcloth
dividers and completion of the work area. This includes an
electrical pump and filtration system for waterfowl.
We are, at the same time, looking into phase three, the
installation of video surveillance camera equipment and lighting.
This will permit us to view wildlife in our care to determine their
viability for release. In addition to this we will install heat
lamps and full spectrum lighting.
